Job Title: Medical Assistant (Mobile Health Unit)
Job Status: Full-time
Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assessing/evaluating patient’s conditions. Taking and recording patient vital signs, collecting specimens, preparing patients for examinations, treatments and otherwise assisting the provider on the mobile health unit as well as driving and performing the required maintenance for the mobile unit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform initial response screening following protocols approved by supervising provider
- Obtain information from patient to complete appropriate paperwork to update patient history
- Determine and document reason for the visit; utilize critical thinking skills within the scope of the role to assess if patient information requires higher level follow-up
- Obtain patient vital signs and accurately documents information in patient file; this includes but is not limited to the following: vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, height, and weight; calculates and documents BMI
- Perform diagnostic tests as directed by provider
- Administer prescribed medications and assist in procedures as directed by provider, nurse practitioner or physician assistant or medical provider
- Facilitate prescription renewals as directed by ordering provider according to ACCESS protocols
- Track and inform patient of laboratory/diagnostic test results as directed by provider and according to organization and office protocols
- Communicate with patient regarding provider instructions based on test results received
- Perform general specimen collection and processing duties (including blood, urine, throat swabs, etc.) or other office procedures as required; during the performance of those duties adheres to all access specific policies, procedures, and safety precautions
- Provide patient/family education as directed by provider, nurse practitioner or physician assistant
- Assist with lifting and transferring of patients and medical equipment with required
- May operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests
- Assist the provider in procedures performed and responsible for preparation of the patient and materials both before and after procedures and sample collections
- Drive mobile health unit in a safe and prudent manner, arriving at destinations via the most efficient route in light of road, weather, and traffic conditions
- Perform daily and routine vehicle maintenance as required
- Complete required paperwork including daily logs, route sheets and petty cash reports
- When not actively engaged in driving duties may be assigned to assist staff in directing clients or administrative support duties
- Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Proper sample collection and processing
- OSHA standards
- HIPAA and confidentiality standards
- Detroit metropolitan area and travel routes
- Safe and standard operating of an ambulance or commiserate box type truck driving experience
Skill in:
- Solid critical thinking skills with the ability to effectively solve problems (e.g., able to determine patient issue requires immediate provider attention if there are significant changes to the patient history or other clinical issues that are presented)
- Strong customer service skills
- Strong multi-tasking skills
- Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office
- Driving experience with an ambulance or other box type truck
Ability to:
- Use a computer system at high level of proficiency, with ability to efficiently utilize clinic technology and Microsoft Office (Outlook Word) Able to attain EMR proficiency and other systems as needed.
- Able to operate medical equipment safely and accurately (EKG, PFT, pulse oximetry etc.)
- Able to collect specimens (swabs, body fluid collection (blood, urine, sputum etc.), administer vaccinations and medications and other general duties as needed
- Communicate in a courteous and friendly manner at all times and to work effectively as a member of the clinical care team
- Read and write at a competent level in order to fulfill essential job responsibilities
- Provide a high level of customer service

- perform mathematical calculations as needed during the course of performing basic job duties (e.g., calculating proper dosages for patient immunizations)
- Organize daily workload keep assigned providers on time to the extent possible or, to help provider manage changes to their schedule to ensure that all patients receive the highest level of care
- Manage supplies of medications and supplies, stock as needed, place orders for supplies with approval
Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Required Disciplines:
- At least 2 years previous clinical experience or equivalent combination of education, experience and /or training approved by Human Resources
- Required driving experience is 2 years driving a box type truck preferred or
- 6 months driving an ambulance preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Licenses/Certifications Required at Date of Hire:
- Certified Medical Assistant or
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or
- Paramedic
- Must possess a valid state Chauffer’s license free of any outstanding violations or be willing to obtain by date of hire
Working Conditions:
Hours: Normal business hours, some additional hours may be required
Travel Required: Local travel, up to 100%
Working Environment: Class C motor vehicle. When driving, working environment will be out in the natural elements (may include dry days, rainy, icy and /or snowy days). Temperature controlled mobile unit and at times will be office based.
