Curatorial Specialist

Job Title: Curatorial Specialist

Job Summary: Under general supervision, uses specialized knowledge in museum collections and program administration as well as skills obtained through experience to conduct research and develop collections, exhibitions and programs in support of the Museumís overall vision and mission. The Curatorial Specialist is responsible for temporary and traveling exhibitions and would assist the Curator of Exhibits and Curator of Collections as needed. The Curatorial Specialist serves as front line contact between the (AANM), Arab American National Museum and artists and other museums, for the purposes of creating and scheduling temporary and traveling exhibitions and assist in shaping the exhibits at the museum, which are viewed by tens of thousands of people each year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and contract with outside curators and artists for temporary and traveling exhibitions.
  • Coordinate logistics related to hosting temporary exhibits.
  • Coordinate with Education & Public Programming on events and docent training for temporary exhibitions.
  • Coordinate with Communications on promotional materials for temporary and traveling exhibitions.
  • Manage loans of artifacts from AANM collections to other institutions.
  • Assist with processing of artifacts into AANM collections.
  • Along with Curator of Exhibits, work to maintain and update the museumís permanent exhibitions.
  • Assist with grant writing/seeking.
  • Plan, develop and implement the movement and scheduling of rotating, semi-permanent and traveling exhibitions.
  • Develop future exhibits schedule.
  • Coordinate the work of guest curators, consultants, scholars, community members and exhibition designers; keeping all parties on schedule.
  • Adhere to confidentiality policies.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Fundamental Concepts, principles and practices of Arab American culture and American studies.
  • Fundamental Concepts, practices and procedures of material culture and the use of objects in documenting and interpreting personal narratives; Arab American history and culture and/or Arab and Arab American art.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office.

Ability to:

  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization as well as with external business partners.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelorís Degree, Masterís Degree Preferred
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Museum Studies, History, Arab American Studies, Cultural Studies, Library and Information Sciences, or related museum field approved by Human Resources.


  • At least one year of professional experience in a museum or related cultural institution, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Working Conditions:

Hours: Normal business hours. Some additional hours are required.

Travel Required: 5 - 10%

Working Environment: Climate controlled office environment.
