Advocacy Specialist

Department: NNAAC(National Network for Arab American Communities)
Location: New York, NY

Job Title:         Advocacy  Specialist (ACE)

Employment Type:           Full-Time

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, uses intermediate skills obtained through experience and training to engage and educate the community about the various current events, programs, initiatives and various points of view that have an impact on the lives of the broader community, including Arab Americans. Leads civic engagement initiatives and utilizes knowledge of changing attitudes of clients, employees or other interest groups to promote issues and mobilize communities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the other team members, (this may include NNAAC members in an assigned region, community partners, and/or key stakeholders) to develop and execute field strategies to achieve established advocacy and civic engagement goals.
  • Lead community outreach strategies designed to engage people interested in being active in ACCESS campaigns and/or initiatives.  Maintain a growing database of people engaged.
  • Build and staff local coalitions and/or local “street teams”.  Ensure participants contribute to various action planning and are integrated into local work, coalitions, and/or government bodies as appropriate.
  • Raise the visibility of assigned advocacy initiatives and organization priorities through community events, tabling, and building earned media events.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with community partners and/or members regarding initiatives in local community, metro Detroit and/or nationally based on assigned functional area. Work as liaison between ACCESS and members, allies, partners, elected officials, and/or other stakeholders.
  • Provide support, leading to increased capacity, of partners and/or members including technical assistance, trainings, resources, etc.
  • Lead in the planning and implementation of local and/or national ACE trainings, conferences and events.
  • Lead and implement youth activities in ACE initiatives as specified by  program/assigned functional area
  • Represent ACCESS at meetings, conferences and presentations.
  • Maintain high-level functioning relationships with other programs and departments (capacity building, fellowship, communications, fiscal, etc.) to ensure the team is actively collaborating to meet goals.
  • May gather and identify messaging, design and content for print and electronic communications.
  • May research, write and edit communication pieces designed to promote and enhance the program including writing press releases, news briefs, e-newsletters, e-mail, program website and other materials.
  • Volunteer recruitment for special events and service projects.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of goals and objectives. Monitor goals and objectives for progress and completion.
  • Ensure that information is collected for accurate and timely reporting as required by funding sources; meet all reporting requirements for all funding sources based on assigned functional area.
  • May assist in researching and writing of grant proposals to foundations, government agencies and corporations.
  • Assist in the coordination of department and ACCESS special events.
  • May interpret/translate information for program participants as needed based on assigned functional area.
  • May maintain clip files, photo archives and other publication archives.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Intermediate concepts, principles and practices of advocacy and civic engagement.
  • Media venues and marketing including social media.
  • Arab/Middle Eastern issues, culture and languages a plus.


Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to operate Adobe Photoshop, electronic media publishing software (including Web 2.0), and HTML coding and editing software may be required based on assigned functional area.


Ability to:

  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
  • Read, interpret, analyze and apply information from current events and pending legislation.
  • Maintain ACCESS brand integrity throughout all work performed.
  • Write and edit effective and efficient communications.
  • Gather information, identify linkages and trends and apply findings to assignments.
  • Incite enthusiasm and influence, motivate and persuade others to achieve desired outcomes.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Associates Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Political Science, Public Policy, Public Relations  or a related field


  • At least two years of field organizing and advocacy experience including online and social media organizing required. Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Working Conditions:


Hours: Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.


Travel Required: 15 – 20% based on assigned functional area


Working Environment:          Climate controlled office environment during normal business hours.
