Attorney I

Job Summary: Under limited direction from a senior level manager, uses specialized knowledge in law and skills obtained through experience, specialized training or certification to provide legal advice to clients of ACCESS across a wide array of disciplines including divorce, civil, criminal matters and immigration. Independently evaluates and selects legal techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in solving cases in the legal realm. Drafts complex legal documentation and works on moderately complex cases. May assist clients with appearances in courts and administrative agencies. Other duties may be assigned.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts assessment of legal situation, problems and needs of clients.
  • Advises clients as to their legal rights in various matters and draws up legal documents pertaining to client’s case.
  • Gathers evidence in divorce, civil and/or criminal matters to formulate defense or initiate legal action.
  • Interviews clients and witnesses and handles other details in preparation for trial.
  • Prepares legal briefs, develops strategy, arguments, and testimony in preparation of legal case.
  • Conducts research related to the law. Confers with colleagues with specialties in areas of law not handled by ACCESS.
  • Represents clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies.
  • Refers clients to attorneys who specialize in legal services not provided by ACCESS.
  • Maintain currency in laws related to legal disciplines offered to clients.
  • Maintains agency confidentiality and client privacy.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Court and agency procedures.
  • Leadership concepts


Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office.


Ability to:

  • Speak, read and write Arabic or language of client population(s) served.
  • Facilitate meetings, ensuring that all viewpoints, ideas and problems are addressed.
  • Gather information, identify linkages and trends and apply findings to cases.
  • Must have good clarity of thought, discretion and judgment ability.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Develop rapport with client and to engender confidence with the client and in their own professional competence and judgment.
  • Good analytical, negotiation, organizational, presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Handle stressful situations and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner.
  • Read, analyze and interpret statutes, general business and legal periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Write contracts, opinions, briefs, reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from courts, regulators, clients, customers and the general public.


Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Jurist Doctorate Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Law


  • A member in good standing of the State Bar Association and at least 4 years of legal and litigation experience preferred or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.




  • Licenses/Certifications Required at Date of Hire:
    • Jurist Doctorate


Working Conditions:


Hours:   Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.


Travel required: none


Working Environment:    Climate controlled office environment during normal business hours.
