Docent

Department: Arab American National Museum

Job Title:        Docent

Employment Type:     Part-Time

Job Summary: Under very general supervision, Docents conduct guided tours of the Arab American National Museum for groups of students and adults. The Docents bring the voices and faces of Arab Americans to mainstream audiences, docents will continue our commitment to dispelling misconceptions about Arab Americans and other minorities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct guided tours of the Museum for groups of students and adults.
  • Utilize the techniques of dialogue and inquiry, role play and storytelling.
  • Encourages students and adults to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions.
  • Attend all briefing meetings before the opening of a new exhibit.
  • Undergo intensive training with education staff before conducting tours. Each week, docents will focus on different sections of the AANM, learning information about the exhibits, transitions between exhibits, and our unique style of giving tours. 
  • Responsible for shadowing AANM staff and other experienced docents on guided tours to gain knowledge and skills in leading tours. 
  • Responsible for reading all assigned material, keeping up on current events that impact the Arab American community, and attend lunch and learns.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • The Arab American National Museum and it’s various exhibits
  • Fundamental concepts, principles and practices of Arab American, Ethnic and Middle Eastern history and current events.


Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and comfortable with using VSP (Volunteer Scheduler Pro) software and Microsoft Office.

 

Ability to:

  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Be enthusiastic, cheerful, responsible, engaging, flexible, patient, and have a willingness to learn. 
  • Submit availability schedule to the supervisor.
  • Work during peak tour times – Wednesday through Friday mornings and afternoons, and/or weekends.
  • Welcome and introduce guest to the AANM.
  • Communicate the mission of the AANM and ACCESS.
  • Offer and share museum programming with visitors.
  • Public speaking/storytelling skills are preferred.
  • Stay current on the program offerings coming up at the museum.
  • Commit to upholding the principles and ethics of the museum

 

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Associate’s Degree

  • At least 1 year of experience or education in history, political science, art, or teaching (preferred)
  • Must complete four to five week intensive training of museum permanent and temporary galleries.

Working Conditions:

 

Hours:   Normal business hours, including weekends.  Some additional hours may be required.

 

Travel required: none

 

Working Environment:    Climate controlled office environment during normal business hours, including weekends.
