Instructor I (After School Program)

Job Title:       Instructor I

Job Status:  Part-time

Program Information: School assignments may be located in schools in the Detroit, Dearborn, and Melvindale Public School systems.

Hours and days vary by site:
School Year (12-14 hours per week) - Monday through Thursday, Tuesday through Friday, Monday through Friday; 2:00pm - 6:30pm

Summer (12-14 hours per week) - Monday through Thursday, Tuesday through Friday, Monday through Friday; 8:00am - 3:30pm

Program Summary: ACCESS recognizes the challenge that many students face in reaching proficiency levels in core subject areas (English and math); that is why the Out of School Time program can provide students with the foundational skills needed to succeed in school, post-secondary, and in the workforce. This year-round STEM-focused program (32 weeks in the school year; 6 weeks in the summer) reinforces academic skills focusing on reading and math, encourages critical thinking, helps students discover/build new interests, and promotes healthy living. Low student-to-staff ratios ensure personalized learning, and youth development activities address students' social emotional learning needs. Students receive a daily hot nutritious meal. Parents/caregivers are offered free literacy and parenting education classes.

Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Instructor I creates and provides a safe learning environment designed to engage students and children in academic, mental, and physical health, life skills, and enrichment activities in an educational setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create lesson plans and implement activities that contribute to a climate where children and students are actively engaged in age-appropriate play, learning and meaningful experiences
  • May teach participant basic concepts of alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes, and comparison
  • Effectively use age-appropriate behavioral techniques to redirect participant’s behavior
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
  • Identify, select and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles and special needs
  • Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offer plans for improvement
  • Maintain effective and efficient record-keeping procedures
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with parents, participants, and other professionals on a regular basis
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment
  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with participants, parents, peers, and community
  • Ensure that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area and/or program classification
  • Assume responsibility for meeting their course and school-wide student performance goals
  • Demonstrate gains in student performance
  • Meet performance goals and/or targets established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning
  • Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of effective early childhood learning and play activities
  • Age-appropriate methods of redirecting inappropriate behaviors
  • May require knowledge of common core standards, and competencies out of school time standards

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office

Ability to:

  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives
  • Incite enthusiasm and influence, motivate and persuade others to achieve desired outcomes
  • Interpret and apply policies and identify and recommend changes as appropriate
  • Organize, manage and track multiple detailed tasks and assignments with frequently changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment
  • Handle stressful situations and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
    • Associate degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited university/college
    • Preference will be given to candidates with an Associate degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Education or related field:
    • 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program: a GPA of at least 2.75 in language arts and math courses is required and will be required to score 70% or higher on basic mathematics and language arts assessment to be considered for employment
    • Adult and Family Learning: Early Childhood Education or CDA Child Development Associate Credential

  • At least 2 years of classroom teaching experience
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training approved by Human Resources

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licenses/Certifications Required at Date of Hire:  None
  • Licenses/Certifications Required within one year from Date of Hire:
    • 16 clock hours of training throughout the year

After School hours:

Hours:  Normal business hours

21st Century Community Learning Centers Program:  Work after school hours but may vary based on assigned school. Hours may very between 2pm and 6pm depending on the site. Some additional hours may be required.
